Our Veterinarians

Raymond Maizel, DVM

VETERINARIAN

Dr. Maizel graduated from Purdue University with an animal science degree. He pursued his Veterinary degree at a university in Italy, graduating from the Universita' di Pisa in 1983. After working for one year in New Paltz, NY, he moved to Connecticut and worked at the Animal Medical Clinic in Brookfield for 4 and ½ years.

In 1989, Dr.Maizel had the privilege of meeting and beginning what became a long term friendship and partnership with Dr. James Howell who started Candlewood Animal Hospital in 1979. They formed a great team with different personalities but very compatible philosophies of practice. Their partnership lasted for 14 years until Dr.Howell's retirement. After that, Dr. Maizel assumed the role of owner and medical director.

He loves caring for his patients and clients delivering a level of care individualized to each owner and patient's means and needs.

He has a special interest in behavioral medicine, which is a major reason for owner's to relinquish their pets. In educating owners of the behavioral aspects normal and abnormal in their pet's environment, he strives to prevent rather than treat behavioral problems.

Another area of special interest of his is reproductive medicine. Having delivered many puppies via Caesarean section due to breed conformation, he and his team pride themselves in the healthy delivery of these puppies.

A special area, in which he is certified, is to perform the PENNHIP procedure for predicting the occurrence of Hip Dysplasia in dogs. When not at the office, Dr. Maizel enjoys time with his family. His wife, Karen, is an integral part of the business team and works from home managing the practice finances.

He is the proud father to 3 grown children, Zachary, Liza, and Charlie. All are on their own and working in fields which they truly enjoy. Dr.Maizel enjoys movies, reading, golf, watching soccer, especially his new team, NYCFC. He shares his home with 5 cats and his Sheltie Mandy.
